Panthers Downed by Flagler 9-4 in Baseball Action
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – In the non-conference game between the Saints of Flagler College, the Panthers fell 9-4 despite Sam Palace’s (Clarkston, Mich.) fifth
homerun on the year in the fourth inning.
Tech was left stranded through the first two innings getting only one base runner on in each inning. In the third the Panthers threatened as they managed
back to back singles that put JD Davidson (Naples, Fla.) and Steve Condotta (Mississauga, Ontario) on the corners. After Condotta’s 25th steal on the year,
the Panthers had two players in scoring position but couldn’t execute as the inning ended on one of nine total strikeouts the Saints pitcher dialed up.
The Saints looking to defeat the Panthers for the second straight year started off getting a run in the first as they combined for two hits, one run, and
stranded three on the bases in their first at bat. Much like the Panthers, the second and third didn’t come with much action as the fourth inning was
rolling around.
The Panthers started the four run fourth inning off as Palace bombed his fifth homerun of the year over the right center field fence tying the game at 1-1.
Brendan Twomey (Boca Raton, Fla.) would be left stranded at second after he smacked a ball to the right field fence would be the end of the threat from the
Panthers. The Saints on the other hand opened up inning up with a base hit then and then went up 3-1 off a two run homerun. Flagler would end up scoring
one more run off of three more hits in the inning; at the end of four, Flagler was leading 4-1.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh inning the Panthers only managed two base hits and only got four on base; an error by the Saints shortstop, a single by
Eamonn Powers (Staten Island, NY), a walk to Mike Messana (Pinehurst, NC), and a double by Condotta. The seventh were lifted again by a two run homerun
pushing the gap against the Panthers. Another three base hits by the Saints drove the seventh and eight run in of the game after two Flagler batters
reached on walks. At the end of seven, the Saints were flying high 8-1.
Starting another late rally, the Panthers managed two runs by a double by Mike Messana after Kevin Villa (Miami, Fla.) reached after being hit by a pitch
and Twomey hit a base hit. Danny Sutton (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) would drive in the Panthers last run with a base hit to left center driving in Messana from
second. The Saints would score their ninth run from two hits in the ninth.
Tech managed to combine for 10 hits but stranded just as many along the bases scoring only four runs in the game against Flagler. Tech now 19-8 overall
will play a key Sunshine State Conference series against Rollins College starting on Friday, March 23rd at the Andy Seminick-Les Hall baseball Field in
Melbourne, Florida.
