Panthers Fall Short in SSC Opener against Barry University 3-1

MELBOURNE, Fla. (men’s soccer)– The Sunshine State Conference opened up play in men’s soccer with the Panthers of Florida Tech hosting the Buccaneers of
Barry University over the Labor Day weekend with Barry capturing the win with a
3-1 final against Florida Tech.

Both sides were excited to get a leg up in the SSC and came out firing with both teams getting an early chance to put their team on the board.
Florida Tech’s Edward Oyarce (Miami, Fl) fired a shot from 20 yards out but the Buccaneers goalie Chris Rich (Valrico, Fl) recorded the save. The
Buccaneers caught a break with a chance in the box but Lee Yakubowich (Victoria, Canada) hit the post.

The scoring got started as the Panthers Matt Cermak (Melbourne, Fl) found Ryan Gilletti (Melbourne, Fl) off a cross to put the Panthers up 1-0.

Shortly after in the 15th minute the Buccaneers had a free kick from 20 yards out with Jason Wiles (Colorado Springs, Co) striking the ball hitting the
underside of the post into the net to tie the game a 1-1. Play continued to go back and forth with neither team scoring again going into the half tied at
1-1.

Physical play started in the second half as yellow cards for both teams got distributed out. Florida Tech’s Jared Sampson (Port of Spain, Trinidad), Piers
Ockleford (Guernsey, U.K.), and Ross Allen (Castel, U.K.) received yellow cards while Samuel Fessehazion (Stockholm, Eng) and Henry Apaloo (Lancashire,
Eng) received yellow cards for the Buccaneers.

The tempo of play flowed back and forth on the pitch until the Buccaneer’s Wiles got another opportunity from 25 yards out which he buried past the
defensive wall and the goalie of the Panthers in the 72nd minute notching the essential game winning goal for the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers added their
final goal in the 80th minute as Apaloo netted the goal. The final score ended in a 3-1 loss for the Panthers.

The Panthers now move to a 1-3 record overall and 0-1 record in the SSC with their next match against Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday, September 9 at
4 pm on the Rick Stottler Field.
