Panthers Fall to #12 Chargers in Extra Innings
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Designated player Ashley Lugo (Cape Coral, Fla.) led the way for Tech in the final two games at the 2007 GSC/SSC Softball Crossover
Tournament hosted by West Florida. Florida Tech (5-5) now .500 on the season faced their final Gulf South opponent University of #12 ranked Alabama-Huntsville today at the UWF Softball Complex falling in extra innings 3-2 in game
one and 6-4 in final game both in the eighth inning.
Lugo batted .286 as the only Panther to hit safely in both games. She finished with two hits, two RBI’s and one run including a double in the night cap.
Tech’s senior catcher Kristen Fettes (Deltona, Fla.) was the only other Panther to notch multiple hits for the day also tallying a .286 batting average
with two hits in the second game, one run and one RBI.
Junior Amber West (Apopka, Fla.) suffered both losses for Tech with a 3-2 overall record. West gave up 11 hits on six runs with only two earned. She fanned
three while walking six for her 10.1 innings pitched.
Senior hurler Judith Husband (Wewahitchka, Fla.) started the second game going 4.2 innings allowing five hits on three unearned runs. She struck out three
and placed one runner on for the day.
Senior Laura Chisena (Ocoee, Fla.) and freshman Ida Danielson (Fairfield, Cal.) combined for two hits and two RBI.
Both games Tech took the early lead coming out 2-to-0 in the first inning. In the first the Panthers held the lead until the bottom of the fifth when the
Chargers tied it up. In the final game, the Crimson and Gray scored two in the first, one in the second and held the lead until fifth where Huntsville tied
it up three all. Tech immediately answered back in the bottom of the fifth grabbing the lead 4-to-3.
Unfortunately for Florida Tech, Alabama Huntsville finished Tech off tying it again in the top of the seventh. They then proceeded to garner two more runs
in the eighth on a damage control mission.
All of the Chargers six runs went unearned for the late victory surge.
In the first both Fettes and Katie Naumoff (Poland, Ohio) scored in the first inning each with free trips to first base. Fettes reached on a fielder’s
choice putting Danielle Stanley (Garyson, Ga.) out at third while Naumoff was walked. Lugo plated both runners.
Chisena and Stanley both scored coming out of the gate. Fettes plated Chisena while and error on the Chargers brought Stanley home.
In the second Ali Wiegand (Tallahassee, Fla.) notched her first triple and then scored on a shot up the middle by Chisena.
Tech remained at three until the fifth when Lugo launched one out center and came home off a triple shot by Danielson deep down the right line.
These would prove to be the Panthers final runs leaving two runners stranded in the next three innings.
Florida Tech will be back in action traveling south to the Barry/NSU Tournament Friday the 16th thru Sunday the 18th facing six NCAA DII south regional
opponents including Barry, Nova Southeastern and Lynn in non-conference single games and Valdosta State, West Florida and Florida Gulf Coast.
