Panthers Finish Sweep of Warriors

MELBOURNE, Fla. (baseball) – The Florida Tech baseball team fended off the Merrimack Warriors in game three of the three game series with an 8-6 victory.

The Panthers offense jumped out to a 4-1 lead in their first at bat after a two run double by Steve Condotta (Mississauga, Ontario). Condotta would cross
the plate by the next batter Eamonn Powers (Staten Island, N.Y.) who reach first base with a single. Powers would score three batters later to put the
forth run up in the inning.

In the second, the Panthers would only score one run off a bases loaded walk bringing in Brendan Twomeny (Boca Raton, Fla.) with two outs on the board. The
third showed no offensive scoring for the Panthers but the Warriors scored one run to cut into the lead at 5-2. In the forth, the Panthers Powers drove in
two more runs with a single up the middle to put the score at 7-2. The Warriors in the fifth made the game interesting as they scored two more runs to be
down three runs 7-4. Going into the eight inning, the Panthers put one more run on the board to gap the lead to 8-4. In the top of the ninth, the Warriors
threatened by scoring two runs with the heart of their order getting on base and scoring those two runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Panthers
pitcher Jay Koch (Orlando, Fla.) pitched out of the jam getting the Warriors batter to line out to second basemen JD Davidson (Naples, Fla.) to finish the
ball game 8-6 in favor of the Panthers.

On the mound was Jonathon Cornelius (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) who started for the Panthers pitched 4.1innings striking out 5 but allowed 4 runs. Relief pitcher
Brett Backman (Ontario, Canada) earned the win (2-0) after pitching 2.2 innings striking out 2 batters allowing only one hit after seeing 7 batters. Koch
finished out the game in the ninth allowing two runs but pitched out of the jam to end the game.

Offensively, Condotta, Twomey, and Powers had multiple hits with Twomey having four, Condotta with 3 and Powers having 2 hits on the afternoon. Powers and
Condotta also drove in multi runs with Powers hitting in three and Condotta hitting in two batters in. Kevin Villa (Miami, Fla.), Eric Trillas (Hialeah,
Fla.), Will Lanier (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Davidson each contributed one hit on the day. The other three RBI’s where driven in by Brandon Veronee
(Chester, V.A.), Twomey, and Trillas.

Tech improves to 7-2 overall and is back on the road to take on the Spartans of the University of Tampa in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday, February 20th in a
