Panthers Lose 5-4 in Season Opener Heartbreaker in Men’s Soccer
AMERICUS, Ga. — Despite leading Georgia Southwestern 3-2 at the half the Florida Tech Panthers were unable to keep the lead falling short by one goal. Tech
gave up a disappointing three goals in the second half to fall 5-4 in their 2006 season opener against Southwestern.
The Hurricanes struck first scoring four minutes into the game when Justin Tarin netted the ball off a GSW corner kick.
The Panthers answered back three more times to jump ahead by two goals beginning at 23:04 with freshman newcomer Jon Rowley (Rockledge, Fla.) scoring his
first collegiate goal. Senior Nick Cepeda (Southbridge, Mass.) was next off a pass by sophomore newcomer Edward Oyarce (Miami, Fla.). Freshman Ross Allen
(Castel, Guernsey, United Kingdom) scored the final goal for Tech in the first period.
Georgia Southwestern did not go down lightly scoring one more goal with under a minute left before the half-time buzzer. They again came out strong in
period two scoring at 61:43 to knot the score three all.
Tech immediately regained the lead only 14 second later when sophomore midfielder Ryan Haggerty (Palm Bay, Fla.) tallied his first collegiate goal. Clay
Watkins, again, tied the game 4-4 when he netted another ball for the Hurricanes at 72:42 on the clock.
Southwestern jumped ahead at 81:30 and held the lead when Etchu Tabe scored his second goal and the game winner for the blue and gold. Starting Tech
goalkeeper Cory Collins (Melbourne, Fla.) was taken out of play and fellow sophomore keeper Tim Matassa (Portland, Maine) took over grabbing one save in
the last eight minutes of play. Collins finished with three saves and suffered the loss, he is now 0-1 on the season.
The Panthers will be back in action on Monday, August 28 hosting Clayton State College at 2:00 p.m. on the Stottler Field.
