Panthers Sink the Bucs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Women’s Soccer) – The Florida Tech Panthers push their record to
7-4-1 and 2-3-1 in the Sunshine State Conference with a 1-0 win over the Barry University Buccaneers.   In a change of pace for this season, it didn’t
take long for the Panthers to get on the board in this match. Florida Tech controlled the ball early with secure passes. Freshman forward Amanda Hjalmarsson received the ball
from freshman defender DeeDee
Newland
in the middle just outside the box. She unexpectedly rifled a shot that dropped in right over the Barry goalkeeper for the first goal
of the match.   “It was nice to see the early goal,” head coach FidgiHaig said. “It gave us a leg up early on.”   Florida Tech kept the 1-0 lead
throughout the half. The Bucs threatened with seven shots, four on goal, but the Panthers defense held strong.   “Our defense did really well
tonight,” Haig said. “It was nice to see us coming off a long road trip and able to get the win.”   During the first half a few Panther players were a
little nicked up. Freshman midfielders Kelli Ragan and Matilda Östergaard, as well as
Hjalmarsson all left the match due to injury. However, all returned in the second half except for Ragan, but she could have played if needed.   Barry
took the edge in shots 15-9, but Florida Tech continued their stingy defense and did not allow a tie.   The Panthers will see their next action in
Melbourne, Fla. at 4 p.m. on Tuesday against Saint Thomas.   BOX SCORE
