Panthers Softball Rallies in 7th to Defeat Lynn
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Led by their junior starting pitcher Amber West (Apopka, Fla.) who pitched a one hit one run game, the Panthers earned their forth win in
the Sunshine State Conference by defending off the Fighting Knights of Lynn University 2-1 by driving in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh
inning.
Lynn got off to a quick start getting a runner on in the top of the first with the base runner moving along the bases from a past ball and then to third
advancing on ground out. The Knights would score their lone run of the game in that first inning as a wild pitch got the runner in.
After the sluggish first inning, West would settle down as she went on through the game striking out nine batters and getting her opponent to ground out
five times and fly out six times. The base hit in the first would be the only hit given up by West in the game; Amber also only walked three in the
complete game earning her fifth win on the year.
Offensively the Panthers threatened in the second and third but couldn’t get across the four stranded base runners left in those two innings. In the forth,
the Panthers would strike to tie the game with the inning starting off with Ida Danielson (Fairfield, Cal.) reaching base off after being hit by a pitch. A
nicely executed sac bunt from Laura Chisena (Ocoee, Fla.) pushed Danielson to second. Leah Tymeson (Lincoln University, PA) at the next at bat drove in
Danielson off a hard line drive double to left field to tie the game at 1-1. Through the fifth and sixth Tech would threaten with a runner in scoring
position at second but would fail to drive the runner in.
Entering the last inning, the Panthers defense would quickly get the three outs to get to the plate. With the top of the order coming to the plate,
Danielle Stanley (Garyson, Ga.) hit a hard drive up the middle getting to first but with the ball skipping past the center fielder Stanley would reach
third with her speed and heads up base running. Two batters later and with two outs, Ashley Lugo (Cape Coral, Fla.) would drive in the winning run with a
base hit in the infield reaching first hustling down the line.
Danielle Stanley was the lone Panther to have a multiple hit game with two but five other Panthers had one hit apiece in the game as Tech combined for
seven hits on the afternoon. Katie Naumoff (Poland, OH), Ashley Lugo, Ida Danielson, Laura Chisena, and Leah Tymeson combined for five of the seven hits.
The Crimson and Grey improves to 14-11 overall and stays atop the Sunshine State Conference improving to 4-0. The Panthers will continue to face Lynn on
Saturday, March 3rd in a double header at home with the first game starting at 1pm.
