Panthers Speared by Spartans 63-47 in SSC Play
Tampa, Fla. (men’s basketball) – Facing Tampa and the SSC for the second time this year there will be challenging tasks ahead but the Panthers just
made their efforts a little more difficult after losing by 16 to Tampa at the Martinez Center on the University of Tampa’s campus Monday night.
Starting the first half, the game got tied up twice, once at 2-2 off the Panthers first bucket from Janko Mrksic (Stoney Creek, Ontario) and tied it again
at 4-4 off an E.J. Murray (Rockledge, Fla.) lay-up which was the last time the crimson and grey were that close in the game. From the time the game was
tied at 4-4, the Spartans went on a 23-11 run to take a half time lead of 27-15. Tech’s 15 halftime points marked their lowest halftime scoring outing of
the year.
Coming out of the intermission Tech got within 11 at 32-21 but Tampa stopped any threat the Panthers showed. Throughout the night, the Panthers struggled
as they only connected on 16 of 44 field goals and hit only one three pointer on 16 attempts. As a team the Panthers shot 36.4% from the field and a
horrific 6.3% from three point range. The Spartans pushed a 20 point lead several times through the second half and finished the game with a 16 point win;
63-47 to mark their third win in the SSC while getting revenge against the Panthers after losing the first match up earlier in the year at the Clemente
Center in Melbourne, Florida.
Leading for the Panthers was Jod Kelley (McCormick, S.C.) who scored a team high of 8 points; Jod also grabbed 7 boards and had 3 blocks and 2 steals.
Murray totaled 7 points against the Spartans in 32 minutes of play.
Tech now 5-16 overall and 1-8 in the SSC have a short break as they play again on Wednesday, January 31st against Lynn University with a tip time approx.
7:30 pm; Lynn won the first match up 71-57 on Florida Tech’s floor.
