Two-Day Weaving Class Set for Sept. 20-21

35-Year Weaving Maestro Leads Lifelong Learning Society Course

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Pam Pawl, a 35-year weaving practitioner and instructor, will lead a two-day introductory course on weaving on a rigid heddle loom on Sept. 20-21 as part of Florida Institute of Technology’s Lifelong Scholar Society.

The course will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in Room 358 of the Florida Tech Commons building at Babcock Street and University Boulevard. The cost is $99 for society members and $149 for non-members. Participants will also have the opportunity to purchase a loom after the course concludes. With a 10 percent student discount, prices are about $139 plus tax for a 10-inch wide Schacht Cricket loom and $157 plus tax for a 15-inch model.

Students will be provided a loom and will learn how to design a project, thread the loom, weave, and finish the project. They will be weaving with yarn and fabric strips to create a thick but flexible fabric that can be used in multiple ways such as a table mat or wall hanging.

The Dunedin-based Pawl, who has taught courses in weave design at University of the Arts, Philadelphia University, Moore College of Art and the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, among other places, said she enjoys weaving because it is both a technical and a creative process.

“I imagine the structure of my next fabric, pick colors and materials, draft the design and make calculations so I can prepare the loom for weaving. Then the magic begins,” Pawl said, “As I weave, subtle nuances of color, texture and surface are revealed that I did not plan. I am always thrilled and surprised by the process. Those new ideas lead me to design my next fabric. I am never bored.”
