Prestigious National Science Foundation Site in Mathematics Is Coming to Florida Tech
Professor Ugur Abdulla, newly appointed head of the Florida Tech Mathematical Sciences Department, was awarded a $258,667 grant by the National Science Foundation to establish a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site on Partial Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems.
Each summer, from 2014 to 2016, nine selected undergraduate students from various United States universities will participate in an eight-week summer REU program held at the Florida Tech Mathematical Sciences Department. It will be directed by Principal Investigator Abdulla and two faculty members, Jian Du and Mine Subasi, and assisted by three graduate students.
The REU program is designed to involve undergraduate students in innovative research in nonlinear partial differential equations, dynamical systems and chaos theory, while applying modern tools of mathematical and numerical analysis. Students will have the opportunity to pursue hands-on, cutting edge research on the frontier of modern mathematics in a world-class research environment.
The program aims to train a new generation of well-rounded mathematicians to shed light on mathematical problems by modeling complex real-life problems and attacking them with the complementary tools of theoretical and numerical analysis. Students will work in groups of three with Abdulla, one other faculty mentor and one graduate mentor. Each group will work on a research problem with potential opportunities for new discoveries in the field.
The students will be prepared to present their research results in national conferences and to publish research papers in high-level mathematical journals. The REU program will facilitate the transition of participants from undergraduate to graduate studies, and will prepare them for careers in research. Participants will learn about exciting job opportunities at the intersection of applied mathematics and other STEM disciplines.
