Public Lecture to Help Business Leaders Go Global, Sept. 12
MELBOURNE, FLA.—How do you lead a global team? What is it like to relocate to another country?
Richard Griffith, Florida Institute of Technology professor and director of the Institute of Cross Cultural Management (ICCM) will address these questions and more on Sept. 12, 11:30 a.m. when he presents “Global Leadership: Influencing Across Borders.” The presentation, for the South Brevard chapter of The Society for Human Resource Management, will take place at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club. The public is welcome to attend.
Griffith will also answer such questions as: What global trends should you be aware of as the world shifts? Can you recognize your own cultural lens and view leadership from another lens?
As all parts of the world become more accessible, organizations expand to become multinational and cross-cultural business interactions surge, which makes global leadership a topic relevant to Brevard businesses.
“Leadership is not a ‘one size fits all’ influence tactic,” said Griffith. “Even within one culture, leaders must adapt to changing conditions and the needs of their people. But when you cross cultural borders, leaders must take their adaptability to a new level. What may energize followers in Chicago may fall on deaf ears in São Paolo and completely demotivate followers in Shanghai. If a leader is unaware of these differences in expectations he or she may lose their international team before they ever get started.”
In addition to global leadership, ICCM services include training in Cross-Cultural Competence (3C) and the Cross-Cultural GPS 360 Degree Feedback Tool. All services are grounded in research and best practices of the field. Florida Tech’s ICCM also collaborates with the BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway; the University of Valencia, Spain; and East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.
