Panthers Win Regional Match Against #9 Ranked Newberry on the Road

NEWBERRY, S.C. (women’s tennis) — Florida Tech (7-10) came up with a huge NCAA III Southeast Regional victory on their first road trip out of the state of
Florida traveling to the Carolina’s for some regional tennis action. Tech downed the Indians of Newberry College (7-6) 7-to-2 breaking up a five game
winning streak for the host Newberry.

Tech has achieved their best program’s record in the short four year history this season having doubled last year’s winning percentage with a .412 hoping
to break .500 by the end of the season. Three Panthers hold individual winning records on the season while both the #1 and #2 doubles are now 9-5 on the
year.

Junior Michaela Horvathova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and freshman Natalia Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) along with sophomore captain Nicole David (Fort
Pierce, Fla.) and freshman Andrea Madrigal (San Jose, Costa Rica) have each paired up to tally a .643 tandem winning percentage.

In today’s release of the ITA regional poll Horvathova and Ramos made their way back into the regional doubles rankings at the #9 spot. For the year, David
holds the best doubles record going 9-15 with Madrigal and 2-1 with senior Tania Gay (Caracas, Venezuela).

The Panthers controlled the doubles 2-to-1 with #1 and #2 winning their matches 8-4 and 8-2, unfortunately Gay and her tandem partner senior Aya Nakatsuji
(Chiba, Japan) fell 8-2.

Horvathova easily took the #1 flight 6-0, 6-4 defeating Autise Mortimer to improve to 9-8 thus far in 2007. In the #2 singles flight, Ramos overcame her
opponent Lauren Hartley 7-5, 6-0 controlling the later set after battling in the first. Ramos is 8-4 in individual action. Madrigal, currently leading the
team with a 10-7 personal record, defeated Tanea Miller 6-0, 6-2 in the #3 flight.

David and Gay came up with two huge wins in the #4 and #5 flights as well for Tech. David pulled off a 6-3, 6-0 victory while one of the key wins came from
Gay 7-5, 6-4 in a well played match for the win.

The Panthers continue their road trip tomorrow in North Carolina facing fellow DII regional opponent’s Wingate University at a 10:00 a.m. match.
