Bill Macom is New Director of Tennis at Florida Tech

– Florida Tech Athletics Director Bill Jurgens has announced that Bill Macom is the new director of tennis at Florida Tech. Macom is the third tennis coach
hired since the program was added in 2004. He will take over for Marla Reid who left at the end of last year’s season to return to California. Macom will
coach the men’s and women’s program. “I believe the future of Florida Tech tennis is much brighter with the hiring of Bill Macom,” said Bill Jurgens. “I am
confident that he is the right person to lead the tennis teams to compete successfully in the Sunshine State Conference.”
Macom leaves his current positions as tennis professional with The Tennis Connection and assistant head professional/junior tennis coordinator at Northdale
Golf and Tennis Club, both located in Tampa, Fla. He was a key trainer of over 60 junior players and coordinated the Tampa USA Junior Tennis League.
“This is going to be a very enjoyable time in my tennis career,” said Macom. “I feel that my best coaching has always been in the college arena and at
Florida Tech I will be able to develop a successful team around a nucleus of all-conference players.”
Previously, Macom was head professional at the Harbour Island Athletic Club and director of tennis at the Hunter’s Green Country Club. These positions,
also in the Tampa area, primarily dealt more with the adult population. In both, he organized charity and USTA tennis tournaments and was responsible for
many other administrative duties.
Macom’s previous higher educational coaching was from 1994 to 2000 when he was the head men’s and Women’s Coach at Division I Jacksonville University in
Jacksonville, Florida. While at Jacksonville he became the women’s tennis career victory leader and ranked second on the men’s victory list.
He also coached both programs to numerous national rankings in the NCAA while numerous students achieved academic and athletic honors. Macom also was an
adjunct professor and, prior to becoming head coach, was the coordinator of alumni and parent relations.
He has also held tennis professional positions at Center Court Tennis Club in Chatham, N.J. and Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port Saint Lucie, Fla.
In 1990 Macom graduated from Jacksonville University with a bachelor’s degree and was a member of the tennis team there. He holds a U.S. Professional
Tennis Association Teaching Certificate (Pro 1 Level).
Macom currently volunteers time to the USA League Tennis Council where he is on the Rules and Regulations Committee. He also sits as the Hillsborough
County District Representative for USA Tennis Florida and is the local league coordinator form District 11 for the Junior Tennis Program in USA Tennis
Florida.
He officially begins on July 1. Macom and his wife Allie and two children, Billy, 6, and Channen, 1, will reside in Palm Bay, Florida.
