Two Students Selected for Hands-on Space Academy

– Two Florida Tech students are among the 21 candidates selected by the Florida Space Authority (FSA) for this summer’s undergraduate program of the
Florida Space Academy. The academy is a one-week, hands-on experience designed to raise science, space and career awareness for Florida students.

Chosen from Florida Tech were Eric P. Anderson, a junior majoring in aerospace engineering, and Andrea Hughes, a sophomore majoring in space sciences.
Anderson is from Bel Air, Md. and Hughes’ hometown is Charlotte, N.C.

The undergraduate academy program is held at the FSA’s Cape Canaveral campus from May 8 to 13. Students experience interactive lectures and research. They
construct a meteorological balloon, assemble a payload for a rocket launch and make on-site visits to key NASA-Kennedy Space Center locations. On the final
day, the undergraduates have the opportunity to meet NASA/KSC leaders and receive information on job opportunities and internships.

Although students are charged a nominal enrollment fee, the program is accessible to all selected Florida students through NASA-funded Florida Space Grant
Consortium financial assistance.
