ROTC Chinese Institute Scholarship Recipients Honored at Welcome Ceremony

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Department of Humanities and Communication will host a Welcome Ceremony on May 10 from 3 to 4 p.m. on campus to honor and introduce the six ROTC cadets who are scholarship recipients. They are: Qiguang “Chino” Chen – Army; Florida Institute of Technology; Astrid Cruz – Air Force; Saint Peter’s College; Jersey City, New Jersey; Lyle Loewen – Army; Boston University; Michael McCarty – Army; Florida Institute of Technology; Adam Paulauskas– Army; Florida Institute of Technology; and Matthew M. Shieh – Air Force; University of Kentucky.

The cadets will participate in Florida Tech’s First Annual Intensive Summer Institute in Chinese, May 10 – June 18.

According to Robert Taylor, department head, “These cadets are at the forefront of the National Security Language Initiative that emphasizes the need for our military officers to be competent in the so-called “critical languages,” such as Chinese. The preparation they receive at Florida Tech will go a long way in meeting the military’s requirements. Moreover, they will be eligible to participate in one of the many Project GO study abroad programs in Chinese at a future date.”
