Students Raise $1,132 for Adopted School

MELBOURNE, FLA.—At Florida Tech’s Homecoming 2007, several student organizations raised $1,132 for nearby University Park Elementary (UPE) School. Gamma Phi Beta sorority students sought donations from small businesses; the Florida Public Relations Association’s Florida Tech student chapter members conducted several activities, including two raffles; and the Student Homecoming Committee conducted the Homecoming King and Queen contest.

Florida Tech “adopted” UPE in 2001. Florida Tech students mentor UPE students, raise funds for the K-6 grade students’ activities and equipment, and conduct an annual Halloween party for the youngsters.

In November, the check was presented by Florida Tech President Anthony J. Catanese to University Park Elementary School Principal Donna Entsminger. She said the money will go toward creating a patio conversation area, complete with paving stones, landscaping, chairs and tables. It will be similar to one built by UPE students with a Florida Tech Homecoming 2006 donation.
