Foosaner Art Museum’s New Exhibit Showcases Diversity of American Identity

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The new exhibition at Florida Institute of Technology’s Foosaner Art Museum, Infinite Mirror: Images of American Identity, tells the story of generations of Americans through artists’ examination of themes such as race, gender, religion, history, politics and family.

On view from May 17-Aug. 17, Infinite Mirror uses different artistic approaches to represent emotional and social ideas in works that are simultaneously narrative, reflective, autobiographical and universal.

Primarily focusing on printmaking as a medium, these artists show an array of triumphs, tragedies, relationships and traditions that inform our notions of nationhood. Infinite Mirror examines ideas of patriotism, communication, the struggle for acceptance, and what it means to be an American in the 21st century.

Four main themes run through Infinite Mirror: self-selection, pride, assimilation and protest, providing audiences with the opportunity to explore both the story and storytellers of the quintessential “American dream.”

Adjacent to the exhibition galleries will be a gallery where children can create their own self-portraits and display them for the duration of the exhibition.

Infinite Mirror is developed by Artrain, Inc. and Brandywine Workshop, Philadelphia, Pa., and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, D.C. It is presented with support from the Institute of Museum & Library Services and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m.; and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays offer free admission all day.

Admission: Adults $5; seniors, children and students with I.D. $2; free for Museum members and for faculty, staff and students of Florida Institute of Technology.
