Tech Baseball Defeats #13 Sharks with an 8-7 Victory
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Panthers baseball team defeated the #13 Nova Southeastern Sharks in a non-conference baseball match with a two out hard driven ground
ball to the Sharks second baseman by JD Davidson (Naples, Fla.) to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning earning the 8-7 victory over
the Sharks.
Tech started things off early as they pushed two runs in the bottom of the first as lead off batter Nick Brennan (Detroit, Mich.) started the Panthers
outing off with a double. Two batters later, Brennan would score the first run of the game off a base hit driven to left field by Steve Condotta
(Mississauga, Ontario). Brendan Twomey (Boca Raton, Fla.) who drew a walk eventually came around to score as Kevin Villa (Miami, Fla.) grounded out to the
third basemen.
Starting pitcher Erik Bua (Port Richey, Fla.) started the first two innings off strong as he only allowed on Shark batter to reach base off a walk. As the
third inning rolled around, the Sharks went on the attack as they scored three runs accumulating four base hits as the Sharks took the lead 3-2. Just as
the Sharks went on the attack, the Panthers countered as they put two more on the board with a two hit two run inning retaking the lead 4-3. Staying on the
prowl, the Panthers quickly got the Sharks out in the fourth and then pushed one more run as Trevor Hearl (Cape Coral, Fla.) started the inning off with a
base hit. Two batters later, Brennan hit his second double of the game driving in Hearl to go ahead 5-3 heading into the fifth inning.
Through the next two innings, the two teams were held at a stand still as Tech’s Erik Bua only allowed one hit through the fifth and sixth inning. On the
offensive side, the Panthers didn’t get anything going in the fifth but the sixth, Danny Sutton (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) started things off with a double but
was picked off taking a lead at second. Will Lanier (Jacksonville, Fla.) hit a base hit to center for Tech’s second hit in two innings.
In the last three innings, the game started to heat up as the Sharks started a two out rally scoring one run as they managed three hits in the seventh
getting within one 5-4. Answering the call, the Panthers scored two runs as Condotta drove in Twomey who reached on an error with his third hit of the game
with a triple down the right field line. Again, Steve would get driven in with a sacrifice fly by Villa to take a 7-4 lead.
The Sharks retaliated as the first two batters reached base on walks and would score one run with base hit from the third batter of the inning and score
the second to get within one; 7-6 in the eighth inning. Continuing their comeback, the Sharks started the ninth inning three straight base hits to load the
bases. Nova would score the tying run as the Sharks batter was hit by a pitch. Mike Piazza (Pt. St. Lucie, Fla.) who came in during the ninth inning
stopped the threat as the he got the Sharks to ground out into a double play for the first two outs and then struck out the last batter for the third out
of the inning. A heads up play by first basemen Eamonn Powers (Staten Island, NY) turned the double play with the force out at home with Villa throwing out
the base runner at first for the second out.
With the bottom of the ninth coming up for the Panthers, Powers drew a walk for a one out base runner. Dane Maglich (Sarasota, Fla.) came in to pinch run
stole second to get within scoring position. A wild pitch ball pushed Dane to third. With two outs, Davidson stepped up to the plate and drove a hard hit
ground ball to the second basemen who bobbled the ball allowing Davidson to reach first and knock in the winning run for the Panthers.
Piazza who came in the ninth inning received the win for his sixth win of the year. Starting pitcher Bua threw 6.2 innings allowed the Sharks first four
runs but kept the fight for the Panthers going. Bua struck out two but got Nova to ground out ten times and fly out eight times.
