Tech Holds Off Sailfish in High Scoring Victory
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech Panthers withstood a seven-run ninth inning by the visiting Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish for their 11th win of the year,
16-13. The two teams created an offensive onslaught, combining for eight doubles, three homeruns, and 28 hits. Six errors added to the high scoring,
including five by the Panthers; four of the Tech errors came in the top of the ninth inning.
PBA struck first in the top of the second, scoring senior Chip Davis (Palm Bay, Fla.) from first on a two-out double by junior Billy Falconio (North Palm
Beach, Fla.).
Tech answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs on six hits. Three of the runs were scored on a Panther homerun off the bat of freshman JD
Davidson (Naples, Fla.), the first of his college career.
After the visitors scored two more runs in the top of the third to pull within two runs Tech put together another offensively loaded inning, scoring six
runs on four hits, extending their lead to eight runs. They followed suit in the next inning, scoring another four runs to take a 15-4 lead, their largest
of the game.
The Sailfish answered back in the eighth inning, scoring two runs, to pull within nine; neither of the two runs were earned as Tech committed their first
error in the top of the inning, opening the door for the visitors to get on the board.
Tech scored another run in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing their lead to double digits heading into the top of the ninth, with the score 16-6.
With the game all but over the visitors began mounting a major comeback, aided largely by the sporadic play by the Panther defense. After sophomore pitcher
Colin Meigs (Jacksonville, Fla.) allowed five runs while pitching 1/3 of an inning coach Paul Knight turned to sophomore Jake Koch (Orlando, Fla.) to close
out the game. Koch, who entered the game with the bases loaded, allowed the first batter to reach on an error by the Panther shortstop; he quickly retired
the next two batters to end the game with a final score 16-13.
Six Panthers had multiple hits in the game; JD Davidson went 2-3 with two runs scored and an amazing six RBIs. Junior Nick Brennan (Detroit, Mich.) went
2-4 with one run and four RBIs. Senior Will Lanier (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 2-3 with a homerun, driving in one run while scoring a game-high three runs.
The Panthers improve to 11-5 on the season while the visiting Sailfish fall to 3-13. Tomorrow the two teams will face off in a doubleheader with the first
game scheduled for 12:00pm.
