Florida Tech Mourns Passing of Student Alex Brack
Junior Civil Engineering Major Passed Away in Car Accident
MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology is mourning today after the loss of junior Alex Brack, who passed away late Sunday in a car accident in the Florida Panhandle.
A resident of DeFuniak Springs, Brack was in the area visiting family and friends. He was 21 years old.
“The loss of this young man will be acutely felt by the Florida Tech family,” said President and CEO Anthony J. Catanese. “His spirit, his energy, his ability to make better those around him were all key components of his character. We grieve with his family, and offer them our heartfelt condolences.”
A junior civil engineering major, Brack was a kicker for three years on the Florida Tech football team. He helped the Panthers defeat Shorter University on Saturday by converting all four of his extra point attempts in the team’s 34-30 win.
He redshirted for the Panthers during their practice season in 2012 and was a member of the inaugural team in 2013. He finished his redshirt freshman season in 2013 3-for-4 in extra point attempts. This season, he was 7-for-8.
“Our team and program loved Alex’s spirit that he brought to this team every day. He was a great young man who was going to be very successful in his life,” head coach Steve Englehart said. “He always had a great attitude, whether or not he was the starting kicker. He was very much a part of this team and loved this team. He would do anything possible to help this team be successful.”
The Panthers will not practice Monday because of a planned off day. The team will honor Brack throughout the remainder of the season, including wearing decals with Brack’s number 92 on their helmets.
The team will resume practice Tuesday for Saturday’s game at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga.
“I hope that every member of our team honors him by really trying to have the same type of attitude and desire to be a part of something special, because that’s what Alex did,” Englehart said. “He had a very contagious attitude that we all loved.”
Funeral arrangements and additional remembrances are pending. Florida Tech faculty, staff and students in need of counseling have been encouraged to contact university’s Counseling and Psychological Services Office.
