Tech’s Giel Grabs Sunshine State Conference Athlete of the Week Honors

ORLANDO, Fla. (men’s tennis) – A total of 12 student-athletes from six different institutions were recognized as SSC Athletes of the Week in their
respective sports, for the week ending February 4. Florida Tech’s Cliff Giel (Savaneta, Aruba) earns the honors for
men’s tennis in the first week of the spring season.

Facing the Nationally ranked #4 University of West Florida, Giel took down his nationally ranked contender in singles action. In the singles match, Giel
overtook the #37 nationally ranked Nicolas Barrientos (Cali, Columbia) #6 in the South region of West Florida 7-5, 6-3 in the number one match of the day.

Staying teamed up with his doubles partner Keith Kessler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who are ranked #15 in the nation and #4 in the Southeast Region took down West
Florida’s Barrientos and Dante Bottini (Buenos Aires, Argentina), both of who are ranked individually on the national level with Bottini 11th overall, 9-7
in the tight doubles match.

Giel who is second on the team behind his partner Kessler has a .661 collegiate winning percentage- 11-6 in 2004, 9-6 in 2005, 14-7 in 2006 and 3-0 thus
far in 2007.
