Fiske Guide: Florida Tech a ‘Top Technical Institute’

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology is again one of the “best and most interesting institutions in the nation,” according to the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2020.
Additionally, the Melbourne-based university is the only Florida school, and one of just 17 nationwide, including MIT, Georgia Tech and Caltech, named to Fiske’s list of Top Technical Institutes for engineering. That exclusive list contains universities with “unusual strength” in engineering, according to the new guide.
Florida Tech is one of just nine Florida schools included in the popular annual guide, which features a select group of about 300 of the nation’s more than 2,200 four-year colleges and universities. And it is one of just two Florida schools ranked in the “Inexpensive” category in the Fiske Private Colleges and Universities Index.
In the guide, compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, Florida Tech – described as “high-flying and innovative” and one of the “major technical institutions” in the Southeast – is singled out for its “challenging” academic climate, appealing “contemporary” campus, student housing that is “modern and well maintained,” and majors that prepare students for real-world success.
Furthermore, given Florida Tech’s location near Kennedy Space Center and amid plentiful ocean and river access, “It comes as no surprise that some of the most cutting-edge work in space and water-related sciences happens here,” according to the guide’s entry on Florida Tech, which also praises the university for its diversity.
“It is a microcosm of intelligent people representing 100 countries,” one sophomore told Fiske.
Florida Tech, the guide concludes, offers a powerful mix of academic, social, cultural and geographical strengths.
“Whether it’s surveying the sky 30,000 feet above or marine coral 50 feet below the sea, students at Florida Tech gets hands-on experience that serves to sharpen the schools’ already specialized, high-quality academics,” the guide says. “The administration continues to focus on capital improvements, sponsor cutting-edge research, and embrace diversity.
“And with beaches and amusements close at hand, students can have some real fun in the sun while they prepare for high-flying or low-lying careers.”
