Grammy-Nominated MUTEMATH Headlines Homecoming Concert

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Grammy Award-nominated MUTEMATH rock-gospel-pop group is the main attraction at the Florida Institute of Technology Homecoming 2010 concert on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8 p.m. 11 p.m. “Doors” open at 7 p.m. at the university’s Southgate Field on the corner of Babcock Street and University Boulevard.

The band, which originated in New Orleans in 2002, plays a variety of music, which is described as everything from electro-alternative rock to psychedelic gospel to experimental pop. Players are Paul Meany on keyboards and vocals; Darren King on drums; Greg Hill on guitar; and Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas on bass.

“For us, we just try to keep it simple. We’re obviously a band; that’s really all we ever wanted to be from the very beginning without catering to any particular genre or political or religious agenda. We just want to make music with no barriers,” said band member Paul Meany in a 2007 Boise Weekly interview.

For “Control,” the band earned a 2005 Dove Award for Best Modern Rock Song. MUTEMATH also was nominated in 2008 for a Grammy Award in the Best Short Form Music Video category for “Typical.”

Opening for MUTEMATH is the band, Mother/Father, which calls itself, “A group of people who like to create musical and visual art.” Their sound ranges from the 60s and the psychedelic 70s to the grunge of the 90s.

Tickets, $20 in advance, are available at Florida Discount Music, located at Babcock Street and US 1, and at Orlando Park Avenue CDs. Tickets are $30 at the “door.” The concert is free to the Florida Tech on-campus community and alumni; tickets should be picked up ahead of time in the Student Life Office or at Alumni House. Other students and the military receive a $5 discount per ticket. A portion of the proceeds will go to United Way of Brevard. Refreshments and parking will be available.
