Professor Is Guest Editor of International Technical Journal

– Dr. Fredric Ham, Harris Professor and Florida professor of electrical engineering, was a guest editor of a special issue
of Neural Networks, the official journal of the International, European and Japanese Neural Network Societies. Ham is the Florida Tech representative to
the Infrasound Consortium for Applied Research.

This organization studies atmospheric and geophysical processes that generate low-frequency sound, that is, infrasound. The consortium is involved in the
detection of nuclear explosions and of early warnings of severe storms and the monitoring of volcanic activity.

Ham also was an invited plenary speaker at the 12th International Workshop on Systems, Signals & Image Processing, held in Greece in September. His
talk was on the classification of infrasound events.

Last spring, with Florida Tech graduate student, Heriberto Delgado, and former faculty member, Mike Thursby, he wrote “A Novel Neural Network for the
Synthesis of Antennas and Microwave Devices.” The paper was published in IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. He is also a regularly invited guest at
Harris Corp. in Melbourne during Engineering Week, each spring.
