Trumpeter Joseph Montelione to Hold ‘Concert with Words’ Feb. 26

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Joseph Montelione, an accomplished trumpeter and Florida Institute of Technology’s new assistant professor of music and band director, will hold a free public recital at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Gleason Performing Arts Center on campus.

Called “Eros: A Concert with Words,” the recital will invert a typical play with music, where the music is incidental or transitional. In this performance, Montelione said, the actor will provide the incidental and transitional material and the focus will be on the music.

The concert involves an eclectic variety of music including American songbook, jazz, contemporary classical, rock and more.

Montelione, who will also instruct the brass studio at Florida Tech, has worked with many notable professionals over his career as a commercial artist. Those include Billy Joel, Tony Bennett, Charlie Daniels, Amy Grant, Ruben Studdard and Lea Michelle.

He can be heard on motion picture soundtracks including Post Grad Survival Guide, Live Evil and Unearthed, as well as the documentary U-Street Sounds and the video game Metropolis.

As an orchestral trumpeter, Montelione has performed with the Florida Orchestra, Opera Tampa, Coastal Symphony of Georgia, Opera Memphis, Memphis Symphony, Moscow State Radio Symphony, Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, Erie Symphony and the Washington Symphony Orchestra, among others, as well as at the Carnegie Hall performance of the United Nations Orchestra.

He has played in orchestras for such Broadway shows as A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum starring Nathan Lane, Victor/Victoria starring Julie Andrews, The King and I starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Big: The Musical, a musical adaptation of the 1988 Tom Hanks film.

Montelione is a 2016 Henry Award Nominee for Best Music Director and Best Musical for his work with Guys and Dolls.

His formal education began at the Manhattan School of Music, continued at State University of New York Fredonia, George Mason University and the University of Southern California.

Upcoming research and creative activity involves the release of a solo album and performances with the Irish Tenors, Cirque Du Soleil, the Australia-based rock band Little River Band and a tour with The Fab Four.

But first up is his concert on campus.

“As the new band director and brass studio instructor, I wanted to introduce myself to the campus community and bring to campus what I do artistically off campus,” he said.
