Women’s Varsity Four Take First at 2007 Governor’s Cup

FELLESMERE, Fla. — Florida Tech hosted the 2007 Governor’s Cup Regatta at Canal 54 in Fellesmere, Florida. This was the second year straight that the
Governor’s Cup was held at Canal 54; prior to 2006 the Governor’s Cup was last raced in 1999 after hosting it for many years in the Indian River. This
2,000 meter event sponsored 16 races for the day. Eight different teams from four different institutions participated in the regatta including NCAA
Division I powerhouses Columbia University (men’s heavyweight, men’s lightweight and women), Notre Dame (men only), along with DII Florida Tech (men and
women) and Division III crew of Marietta College (men and women).

The Florida Tech Women’s Varsity Four brought home the only gold for the Panthers today. Defeating Columbia and Marietta by three and thirteen seconds was
the only repeat performance from last season. Senior Rachel Purvis (Brockville, Ontario) and sophomore Jennifer Johnson (Portland, Ore.) were part of both
winning teams from this season and last season. Freshman Laurel Borgais (Spokane, Wash.) took the endurance test for the day as the lone freshman to row in
all three women’s races.

This year’s varsity four members rowed in numerous races today, due to a small roster size. Taking the first place spot included freshman coxswain Ana
Mantilla (Quito, Ecuador), senior stroke oar Rachel Purvis, senior three seat Safia Tappan (Sarasota, Fla.), freshman two seat Laurel Borgais and sophomore
bow seat JJ Johnson.

The Panther women’s four also came on strong for the second week straight winning their event after defeating Stetson and Temple in the lightweight
category. The winning time this week was 7:45.0 with the Marietta Pioneers in second with a 7:48.2 time and the Columbia Lions bringing up the rear with a
time of 7:58.1.

For the day Columbia’s programs took home most of the first place finishes winning twelve of the 16 events of the day. Marietta took the MFN4 won along
with the MJV8 Petite Final. Notre Dame along with the Florida Tech men’s program’s best finishes of the day was second place times. Our Panther men’s
varsity eight finished second in the Fourth Flight with a time 6:09.1, and 6:04.6 in the second heat which was the best Tech time of the day.
