Your Book of Career Finding Spells and Enchantments

By: Kelsey McMullan

With the school year winding down, it’s natural to start thinking about what you want to do after your final exams. How about a summer job or internship?

The office of Career Management Services has a bunch of resources for you to use to find all kinds of positions. There are so many resources in fact that it could be a little confusing to find exactly what you are looking for.

Start at the beginning. On the left side of our page you’ll find a section called ‘Student Resources’. On campus students should select the ‘Student Resources’ subheading. Online students and extended students please select ‘Online and DES Students’.

Once you are into middle earth there are a few paths that you can select.

Panther Career Link is our Monster.com or CareerBuilder site. It contains all the jobs that our office receives or finds to post. This is where you should start looking for positions.

Being registered in Panther Career Link is also vital to our students because it allows our office to assist you to the best of our abilities. Besides having access to a constantly updated job list, you can also look for upcoming workshops and reserve your seat, or sign up for our other wonderful events.

In addition you can also upload a resume, cover letter, and other documents you want recruiters to find. When a recruiter comes to campus we create a book of resumes for them based on the resumes that are uploaded in Panther Career Link.

It’s not uncommon for companies looking for Florida Tech students to do their own search on Panther Career Link and contact students directly. Your chances of being contacted increase exponentially when you have a fantastic resume uploaded to your profile.

Directly under the Panther Career Link Box is the “Career Resource Center”. This page contains all the magic incantations and potions you need to cast a spell on an employer.

In this cauldron of goodness you will find tips for creating a resume, job searching strategies, workshops, plus networking tips and much more. The list goes on and on!

You can also download some of our materials straight to your own computer/other devices. We have made presentations from our workshops available online as well as all the handouts that we produce.

Beyond the website our office also has a bunch of in person perks that we would like to offer you.

Every Friday that class is in session we have “Drop-In Resume Critique Day”. You can drop in anytime between 9am and 4pm and have your resume reviewed on the spot. Just make sure you bring a printed copy with you.

If you don’t have a resume yet, click the “Resumes” section in the Student Resources and you will find sample resumes, tips, checklists, and an action verbs sheet available to download. You will also find “Optimal Resume”. This is a resume creating site that is free for Florida Tech students to use.

Do you still have questions or want to see someone in person? You can schedule an appointment with a member of our staff for a personal consultation. Please call ahead or email us! We like to make appointments so we can guarantee that someone is available to assist you.

Another perk that we are happy to extend to all Florida Tech students is an invitation to the Colleges of Central Florida Career Consortium Career Expo. The Expo is on Thursday April 4th in Tampa Fl. Because of our association with the CCFCC, there is no charge for our students to attend the Expo.

This Career Expo is perfect for students tired of seeing primarily engineering companies at our career fairs! Some employers that will be at the Expo are: AFLAC, GEICO, Franklin Templeton Investments, Hilton, Panera Bread, and T. Rowe Price.

Hopefully this outline of our resources helps you in your search for a career! If you need any help don’t hesitate to come to a workshop or make an appointment.
