Dr. Tino Alavie ‘86, ‘88, ’92, An Entrepreneurial Spirit and Passion for Care

Tino Alavie, PhD, can’t help but create his own business ventures. He has been directly or indirectly responsible for creating, managing, and growing seven technology start-ups in North America and Europe from start to financial exit.

Currently, as president and chief executive officer of Qvella Corporation, Dr. Alavie is the driving force behind the innovative research being conducted by the company. Qvella’s mission is to improve septic patient outcomes and save lives. “The confluence of emerging and disruptive technologies presents incredible opportunities for improvement in the delivery and management of healthcare that will ultimately benefit patients, providers, and payers. It is my hope and aspiration to continue the development of technologies and products that help transform human health,” he explains.

Tino is a seminar leader and guest lecturer with the faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. He has been awarded fourteen patents with an additional six pending. Widely published with over fifty articles in journals and conference papers, Dr. Alavie received his bachelor’s degree (1986), master’s degree (1988), and doctoral degree (1992) from Florida Tech in electrical engineering. He also holds a post-doctorate in fiber optics sensing from the University of Toronto. He was recently awarded Florida Tech’s College of Engineering Outstanding Alumnus Award for 2013.
