MELBOURNE, FLA. — An inventor, an entrepreneur and an astronaut walk into a library…

But this is no joke. Three distinguished representatives of those lofty vocations will share stories of how engineering inspired their careers as Florida Institute of Technology celebrates Engineers Week 2018 with “Inventors, Entrepreneurs & Astronauts” at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in Evans Library.

The event, part of the Library After Hours series, is free and open to the public. High school and middle school students are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

The three speakers are Mary Helen McCay, Al Nuttal and Winston Scott.

  • McCay is an inventor, astronaut alternate, professor and engineer. She holds 24 patents and was named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2017. She was also inducted into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame last year with Dwayne McCay, her husband and the president of Florida Tech.
  • Nuttall is an entrepreneur and a chemical engineer. He is the former president and CEO of Far Research, Inc.
  • Scott is a U.S. Navy captain, astronaut, engineer and accomplished trumpeter. He served as a mission specialist on two shuttle missions and logged a total of 24 days, 14 hours and 34 minutes in space, including three spacewalks totaling 19 hours and 26 minutes. He is senior advisor to the president at Florida Tech.

Each speaker will offer a 15-minute talk followed by five minutes for questions.
