“Black Suns: An Astrophysics Adventure” Documentary Screening with Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi: August 24, 2017
Building off the excitement of Monday’s solar eclipse viewing party, Florida Tech is pleased to announce that we’ve just booked a screening of “Black Suns: An Astrophysicist’s Adventure,” an award-winning documentary featuring our very own Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi.
Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi — eclipse chaser and Florida Tech research professor — is an astrophysicist with an extraordinary story.
On August 24, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Gleason Performing Arts Center, Florida Tech will be screening “Black Suns: An Astrophysics Adventure” — a documentary that chronicles the life of Dr. Oluseyi and another globetrotting African-American astrophysicist, Dr. Alphonse Sterling of NASA.
In 2012, both Sterling and Oluseyi traversed three continents to chase two solar eclipses — but growing up, they led very different lives.
Oluseyi left behind a past of poverty, homelessness and gang pressure to make his mark in astronomy.
The screening of the 50-minute documentary is free and open to the public. The documentary will be followed by a Q&A session with Dr. Oluseyi. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and seating is limited.
The film is hosted by award-winning cultural astronomer Dr. Jarita Holbrook.
About Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi
Dr. Oluseyi, who is also a frequent contributor to the Discovery Channel and National Geographic, has made appearances on science-related TV shows like “Bill Nye Saves the World” on Netflix.
He is the host of two popular television shows, “Outrageous Acts of Science” and “How the Universe Works” on the Science Channel.
Dr. Oluseyi is temporally stationed at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he is space sciences education manager for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
The Florida Tech professor has led a research group at FIT that hacks stars to understand the fundamental interactions of plasmas and electromagnetic fields, develop new in-space propulsion technologies and investigate Galactic structure and evolution.
