Florida Tech Offers Hands-on Summer Camp in Nanotechnology

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology offers the week-long Camp NanoTech, a summer camp for high school students who are interested in learning
about nanotechnology, during the week of July 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nanotechnology is a new field of science devoted to designing and studying
ultra-small materials and provides techniques for building tiny objects “from the bottom up,” one atom at a time.

Camp NanoTech is open to any student who has completed a high school level chemistry class or two years of integrated science. Those who are interested in
any area of science and engineering are strongly encouraged to participate.

Campers will engage in hands-on activities that will include operating a scanning tunneling microscope to view atoms, making a liquid that responds to
magnets, learning the history of nanotechnology and touring the campus laboratories. Students also build models, perform laboratory experiments, operate
scientific instruments and talk with Florida Tech faculty and undergraduate students about the college and research experience.

The summer camp program is led by Kurt Winkelmann and Joel Olson, department of chemistry faculty members. Both teach Introduction to Nanoscience and
Technology, one of the nation’s few freshman-level nanotechnology laboratory courses.

The registration fee per student is $210 with lunch or $175 without and includes a T-shirt and supplies. Registration forms and fees must be received on or
before June 19 and can be mailed to Florida Institute of Technology, Department of Chemistry, Camp NanoTech, 150 W. University Blvd., Melbourne, Fla.
32901. One hundred percent of the fee will be refunded until June 19; 50 percent until July 6; and no refunds will be given after July 6.
