Florida Tech Women Earns First Ever SSC Win Against Lynn 1-0
MELBOURNE, Fla. (women’s soccer) — The Panthers accomplished two feats with the 1-to-0 victory against the Lynn University Fighting Knights this afternoon at
the Stottler Field. Florida Tech grabbed their first conference win for their 2006 campaign, while defeating Lynn for the first-time in the programs’ short
four-year history.
The Fighting Knights came on strong in the first half out-shooting the Panthers 8-to-1. Tech held off andn extremely offensive blue and white SSC foe to a
scoreless outcome. Despite the Knights attack both teams remained knotted in the first period.
With fourteen minutes left before the half-time break, the game was delayed forty-five minutes due to lightning in the area. Both teams agreed upon a
shortened two-minute half-time break and came out strong in the second period. Again the Knights out-shot Tech eleven to five in the remaining half.
After a few good runs by the crimson and gray strikers the right combination came to fruition when freshman forward Teresa Brantley (Satellite Beach, Fla.)
found the back of the net to score the first goal and the eventual game winner for Tech.
In the 64th minute, senior defender Renee Yonkof (Zephyrhills, Fla.) pushed through the visiting Knights’ defensive stance to flick a quick pass to fellow
senior midfielder Danielle Emhoff (Canton, Conn.). Emhoff immediately lobbed it to Brantley to score her seventh career goal. Both Yonkoff and Emhoff
tallied the double assist for the game.
The Panthers did not give up fighting a tight battle in the back-field shutting down Lynn’s every attempt at tying up the match. Senior defender Rocio
Hernandez (Madrid, Spain) blocked two shots on goal by the Fighting Knights.
But the play-of-the-day came from a late-game rally shot by the Knights’ Vanessa Zalis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.). Coming off a corner kick, sophomore
defender Zalis sliced the ball passed Tech’s keeper only to be deflected by senior midfielder Tara Euginedes (Dade City, Fla.) right at the goal-line to
uphold the crimson and gray’s shut-out with thirty second remaining on the clock.
Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Pyles (Port Orange, Fla.) pulled off her 4th solo shut-out and 5th team shut-out on the season. Pyles notched 5 saves on 90
minutes of play.
Florida Tech advances to 5-3-3 on the season and 1-1-2 in the conference. The Panthers will host Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, September 30th at 2:00
p.m.
This weekend we will celebrate parent’s weekend along with senior recognition day in a pre-game ceremony. Following the women’s home game the men will host
