Fiske Guide to Colleges 2016: Florida Tech a ‘Top Technical Institute’

Influential Publication Notes Graduates’ Success in Workplace

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology was among the nation’s “Top Technical Institutes” in the 2016 Fiske Guide to Colleges, earning a spot in the influential annual directory’s list alongside Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and just 14 other schools from across the country.

Overall, Florida Tech was one of a select group of four-year colleges and universities in the Fiske guide, which spotlights the “best and most interesting” schools across the country.

Showcasing just 300 of the more than 2,200 four-year colleges in the U.S., or fewer than 14 percent, the guide described Florida Tech – the only independent technological university in the Southeast – as a “high-flying and innovative school,” noting its rigorous academics, hands-on education, international diversity and outstanding location.

Florida Tech was one of just nine Florida schools included in the guide.

Using student surveys and administrative input, the Fiske team examined eight key areas in developing its findings: academics, campus setting, student body, financial aid, housing, food, social life and extracurricular activities.

Other comments in in the Fiske essay on Florida Tech:

  • “It comes as no surprise that some of the most cutting-edge work in space and water-related sciences happens here.”
  • “It’s like traveling the world in four years.”
  • “…those who plan their education well are able to get high-paying technical jobs as soon as they graduate.”

The essay concluded, “Whether it’s surveying marine coral 50 feet below the sea or the sky 30,000 feet above, students at Florida Tech get hands-on experience that serves to sharpen the school’s already specialized, high-quality academics.”

It continued, “The administration continues to focus on capital improvements, sponsor cutting-edge research and embrace diversity.”

The 2016 Fiske Guide to Colleges is available at most major bookstores and online retailers.
