Florida Tech to Celebrate Lincolns Bicentennial Feb. 12

MELBOURNE, FLA — On Feb. 12 Florida Institute of Technology’s Department of Humanities and Communication will host a celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th
Birthday, which occurs on this date. Florida Tech students will join others across the nation in commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s legacy by reading portions
of his historic speeches in public. Florida Tech’s festivities will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Panther Plaza, located in front of the Denius
Student Center on campus.

During the celebration, students will read selected sections of Lincoln’s speeches ranging from his 1838 Lyceum address to his second inaugural address in
1865. Fifth graders from nearby University Park Elementary School in Melbourne will also attend the event.
The afternoon speeches will precede an evening Humanities Series Lecture given by Robert Taylor, head of the Department of Humanities and Communication and
a professor of history.

His speech, “Abraham Lincoln at 200: The Man and the Myth,” will take place that evening at 7 p.m. in the Crawford Building, room 112. Taylor will explore
the many reasons why Abraham Lincoln is considered to be one of our greatest presidents by examining his life from early childhood to his role as president
of the United States. He will also discuss Abe Lincoln’s position on the issues of slavery and the Civil War.
