Women’s Soccer Shuts Down Chargers 6-0 to Open Up 2006

PANTHERS BLOW PAST CHARGERS IN SEASON OPENER
MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Florida Tech Panthers open up the 2006 season shutting down the Chargers from Briar-Cliff (Iowa) 6-0 at the Stottler Field. Second year
head coach Fidgi Haig helped lead his team to a great defensive effort allowing only two shots by Briar Cliff to Tech’s 23 shots for the match.
Senior defender Rocio Hernandez (Madrid, Spain) and freshman forward Teresea Brantley (Satellite Beach, Fla.) each netted two goals for the Panthers.
Hernandez scored her first two on the season tallying a career seven goals, while Brantley managed her first two ever collegiate goals with four points.
“My first game at Florida Tech was better than I had expected,” stated Brantley. “I was really nervous at first but with everyone working together and
supporting each other we pushed each other to keep working hard…it was a great beginning for us.”
Senior midfielder Tara Euginedes (Dade City, Fla.) opened up the scoring at twelve minutes into the first half after a rebound off a Charger defender. This
goal would prove to be the Panthers only goal in the first half and the subsequent game winner. The score would remain 1-0 heading into the half with Tech
out shooting Briar-Cliff twelve to zip.
A minute into the second half, Brantley notched goal #2 after a smart push past two defenders to net the ball.
Hernandez headed the third goal at 65 minutes off a beautifully launched corner kick by freshman newcomer Rachel Devlin (Titusville, Fla.). Brantley would
answer again six minutes later following a pass from fellow freshman reservist Lani Burgess (Penacook, N.H.).
Senior defender Jennifer Dunn (Vero Beach, Fla.) launched the fifth goal over Chargers’ keeper Mikayla Martins head from 30 yards back. Hernandez knocked
the final goal in the net after a free kick outside the box. Dunn tapped the ball back to Hernandez to record the assist.
The Panthers are now 1-0 on the season and will face New York Institute of Technology tomorrow at 4:30 on the Stottler Field.
