A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WORK STUDY

Ah, to have the privilege to be able to be a Work Study Student in the Humanities and Communication department at Florida Tech. Walking in seeing friendly faces happy to see you arriving for work; it makes doing the work well, not so… work-y? I thought it would be general droll office tasks, little did I realize that calling my job “office work” was nowhere near as appropriate of a title as it should have been.

Everyday it’s a different task, whether it be delivering a package or learning something new for a party the Humanities and Communication department is throwing, I always have to stay on my toes to keep up. I have assisted in many things including but not limited to making calendars, gluing pictures and even setting up a tea party for the Netherlands Study Abroad Program!

There is only one constant at this job that I can expect no matter the day; and that ladies and gentlemen is the mail. In the famous words of Newman from Seinfeld, “The mail never stops. It just keeps coming and coming and coming. There’s never a letup, it’s relentless. Every day it piles up more and more, and you gotta get it out, but the more you get out, the more keeps coming in!” Though this seems exaggerated I can attest to its accuracy.

All in all I wouldn’t give up this job for any other. When you mix the environment, the people, the schedule and even the tasks, this Work Study makes for a great experience and I hope to keep it as long as I can. To anyone wondering about what job to look for at Florida Tech, the Humanities and Communication department is where I would recommend starting.
