Florida Tech’s Treat or Treat Offers Halloween Fun for All

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology’s Department of Residence Life is holding a free, public Halloween event Sunday, Oct. 29, that features four movie-themed haunted houses and, for the first time, a house for the children 5 and under, in addition to bounce houses and other inflatables, booths from campus groups and community vendors, and of course lots of sweet treats.

Treat or Treat runs from 2-5 p.m. at the university’s Residence Hall Quad off Country Club Road in Melbourne.

Four residence halls will feature walk-though experiences with movie themes, each a bit scarier than the other. All will have some dark areas, loud noises and theatrical effects.

Wood Hall will be decorated as Beauty and the Beast. It is appropriate for all ages.
Campbell Hall will have a Guardians of the Galaxy theme and is considered appropriate for ages 8 and up.
Grissom Hall will have a Wonder Woman theme and is also considered appropriate for ages 8 and up.
Evans Hall will be the scariest house. Decorated around the hit television show The Walking Dead, this house will feature jump scares and student volunteers in costume chasing visitors in addition to other effects. It is appropriate for ages 13 and up.
For those guests 5 years old and younger, Shaw Hall will be decorated as an exotic zoo. This house will allow visitors the opportunity to knock on doors and get an authentic trick-or-treating experience.

Children will not be denied access to any of the halls based on age, though they will be warned about scariness levels.

The Quad Lawn will feature other things to do: Booths offering games and activities, an array of inflatables, and a costume contest with prizes and music. More than a dozen clubs have confirmed their participation in the event.

Also new this year will be a pumpkin patch inside Florida Tech’s new Ethos Community Garden on the Quad Lawn. Kids will be able to select pumpkins and paint them. Photo opportunities on hay bales will also be available.

Orchestrated by Florida Tech’s 55 resident assistants and five resident directors and utilizing the help of dozens of students living in the residence halls, Treat or Treat is one of three major annual events staged by the Department of Residence Life, according to Zachary Eichholz, resident director of the Quad who oversees Treat or Treat.
