Clark Endowed Scholarship Recipient Named at Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, FLA.—At Florida Tech’s annual Honors Convocation in April, Ashley Bacon was the recipient of the Dr. Kerry Bruce Clark Endowed Scholarship in Marine Biology. She earned the award for her strong academic record, involvement in research, campus community activities and vision for professional development.

Bacon, from Stratford, Conn., is currently a junior majoring in marine biology and a member of the Tri-Beta biological honor society and Phi Eta Sigma national honor society for freshman students. Bacon has assisted in Associate Professor of Marine and Environmental Systems Kevin Johnson’s research, and has also written the book, The Fiber Option: A Real (Anti-fad) Plan for a Healthier Lifestyle published in 2005.

Dr. Kerry Bruce Clark was a member of the biological sciences faculty from 1971 until his death in 1999. A full professor, he was named a 1996 Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in honor of his work documenting rare species of sea slug. His research on mollusks, marine ecology, psychological ecology and biodiversity was widely published in scientific journals.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a Florida Tech undergraduate marine biology student who shows promise to achieve excellence in a career related to marine biology. Bacon is the eighth recipient of the award.
