#25 Panthers Battle #7 Spartans to a 5-1 Loss

MELBOURNE, Fla. – In the first game of the three game SSC series against the #7 ranked University of Tampa Spartans, the Panthers battled the Spartans in a
pitchers duel that ended in a 5-1 loss for the Panthers.

Starting pitcher Jake Koch (Orlando, Fla.) pitched a gem of a ballgame throwing 7.2 innings striking out four batters with only three walks but utilized
his defense behind him to get the Spartans to ground out 13 times and fly out three times. Jake did allow eight hits but through his first six innings of
pitching, Koch only allowed five hits and three walks without giving up a run.

In the seventh, the tables turned as two costly errors by the Panthers scored two Tampa runs as they recaptured the lead 2-1. Again in the eighth, Tampa
shut the door scoring one run off a double and the other after a wild pitch giving them a 4-1 lead. The Spartans would knock in their last run of the
ballgame in the ninth as two back to back hits drove in the final fifth run.

Offensively the Panthers scored the first run of the ballgame in the fourth inning as Michael Demma (Coral Springs, Fla.) reached with his lone base hit of
the game. A nicely executed sacrifice bunt by Eric Trillas (Hialeah, Fla.) pushed Demma to second and with a line drive back up the middle by Brendan
Twomey (Boca Raton, Fla.) drove in the Panthers lone run of the ballgame.

The Panthers did have other opportunities to put runs on the board in the fifth and eighth innings but couldn’t drive across any runs. In the fifth
freshman JD Davidson (Naples, Fla.) reached on an error by the third baseman and got to second after his ninth stolen base of the year and with Steve
Condotta’s (Mississauga, Ontario) second intentional walk of the year put two on but the Panthers couldn’t produce anything further. Again in the eighth
Davidson stole for his tenth stolen base of the year after reaching on a walk but was left stranded after three consecutive outs.

Tech did manage to gather six hits during the game with Trillas and Twomey gathering a multi hit game with two apiece while Condotta and Demma where the
other two who got a hit in the game. Koch receiving the loss moves to 3-4 on the year with Tampa’s starting pitcher Kevin Ferguson earning his 8th win of
the after pitching six strong innings allowing one run and giving up six hits.

Tech falls to 27-17 overall and 11-8 in the SSC but is back in action against Tampa in a double on Saturday, April 21st starting at 1pm; prior to the first
game, the Florida Tech Seniors will be recognized for the efforts, hard work, and accomplishments here at Florida Tech.
