Graduate Student Awarded Skelly Fellowship

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Linh K. Nguyen, a Florida Tech master’s degree student in oceanography/coastal zone management, has been awarded a $3,000 Gertrude E.
Skelly Fellowship for the spring 2008 semester.

A resident of Philadelphia, Pa., Nguyen earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Temple University in 2003. In 2006, she spent time with the
Peace Corps in the Philippines as a wildlife and marine conservationist. She has a special interest in conserving endangered species, rehabilitating
coastal resources, and replenishing and managing fisheries.

Nguyen’s new fellowship was funded by the Gertrude E. Skelly Charitable Foundation with a match by the F.W. Olin Foundation of New York.
The late Gertrude E. Skelly established the Boynton Beach, Fla., foundation in 1991 to provide medical care and educational opportunities for those who
cannot otherwise afford them. The Skelly Endowment was arranged by Erik Edward Joh, Esq. The Skelly fellowship is awarded to deserving graduate students in
the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems.

Florida Tech’s oceanography and coastal management programs are part of the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems. The department offers degree
programs in costal zone management, environmental sciences, marine science, meteorology, ocean engineering, Earth remote sensing, oceanography and
environmental resource management.
