Florida Tech Football: My First American Football Experience

This past September I had the opportunity to go to my first American football game ever. What made it even more special was that it was also FIT’s first football game! I enjoyed the game very much and the atmosphere was amazing. Being a huge sports fan myself made it all the better.

Football is the most popular sport in America, but I didn’t realize just how popular it was until I witnessed my first tailgating session. A couple hours before the game, people from all over Brevard County parked their trailers on campus and started partying, cooking and just having a good time! At the game, I saw the FIT community unite to cheer on the players to victory on their home turf. When FIT ended up beating Stetson 20-13, the celebration was huge.

Two weeks after their first game, the Panthers faced West Alabama – a team ranked 12th nationally in Division II. This particular game was shown live on national TV and was also FIT’s first “white out” game, where fans participated by wearing white and the first 1,000 fans received a free T-shirt. In the end we lost, but we did not go down without a fight. The players got a taste of what it would be like in the big leagues and learned how they could improve themselves. We know they can play hard and we are all here to back them up!

The football games are free for all FIT students. At first it took me a while to understand the rules, but it is worth it for anyone with or without football knowledge to attend the games.

I grew up watching football (soccer), which is my favorite sport. But after watching a couple games of American football, I can honestly say it’s another sport that I will be tuning in to.

What is your favorite sport and or team?
