Florida Tech Women Top Saint Leo 60-46

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Junior guard Danielle Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) scored 16 points to lead all players and help the Florida Tech Panthers women’s
basketball team (9-7, 3-2) to a 60-46 victory over the Saint Leo Lions (5-10, 2-3) in Sunshine State Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Clemente
Center. This victory nudged the Panthers above Saint Leo in the current standings to take the 4th spot alone with Rollins topping the league after
defeating Lynn today.

Saint Leo took control of the first half early out hustling the Panthers, with the Lions going up as much as ten points at 7:11 on the clock when sophomore
guard Jenna Drouin (Nashua, NH) hit a three to put the score at 14-24. Tech answered back lessened the lead by six off a jumper by sophomore guard Tenisha
Chase (Temple Hills, Md.) at 5:32.

The Lions’ than widened the gap once again on an aggressive run started by sophomore guard Amanda Holloway (West Palm Beach, Fla.) hitting a lay-up inside
the paint. At under two minutes left on the first half clock, sophomore forward Marquita Fenn brought the score to 34-22 in the Lions’ favor making the
most of a turnover from the Panthers and hitting a two to push them ahead twelve points.

Heading into the locker room Saint Leo had the lead 35-28.

The Panthers took their first lead of day with 8:28 to play in the second half, as Vaughn’s three-pointer gave Florida Tech a 43-42 lead. Vaughn was then
fouled on the next possession and hit only one of her free throws.

The Lions’ senior guard Danielle Hoeffner (Tampa, Fla.) immediately answered back hitting one from the arc to regain the lead at 7:17 on the clock. Tech’s
junior guard Jen Tamilio (Salem, Mass.) took it down the court and also hit a three to regain the lead. The Panthers’ never looked back finishing the game
14 point ahead effectively shutting down the Lion offense.

Tech lead under the boards grabbing 46 rebounds to Saint Leo’s 27. Despite the Panther’s problem holding onto the ball turning it over 31 times to the
Lion’s 25 they still managed to grab the victory.

The Panthers were 75.0% from the line whereas the Lions went a disappointing 38.1% for free throws.

Holloway led her team finishing with 15 points. Hoeffner added nine points and seven steals, while freshman Katie Koestner (Oviedo, Fla.) chipped in team
high nine rebounds and three assists along with five points.

Besides Vaughn’s high score, leading the crimson and gray were Tamilio finishing in the double figures with 12 points, four boards and five steals. Three
other Panthers added six points including junior Danise Fequiere (Miami, Fla.), Chase and junior Milana Velasquez (New York, NY). Chase also led her team
defensively with nine rebounds.

Florida Tech will host Eckerd College in an SSC doubleheader Wednesday, January 18. Tip-off for the women’s game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The men’s
contest is slated to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
