Florida Tech to Host 13th Annual High School Business Ethics Competition
MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Tech College of Business and Community Educators Credit Union invite high school juniors and seniors to participate in the
thirteenth annual High School Business Ethics Competition on Thursday and Friday, March 5-6. In the event, the students from Brevard County and other
Central Florida high schools compete by developing solutions to thorny ethical problems. The College of Business invites high schools to join in for a
chance to win scholarships and cash prizes.
The competition is designed to encourage high school students to explore the subject of ethics, reflect on how ethical principles relate to the
decision-making role of businesspeople, and evaluate the ethical adequacy of actual management decisions. The competition allows students to further
develop their team skills; experience the challenge and enjoyment of interschool scholastic competition; and meet and interact with experienced business
leaders to discuss ethics in the world of work.
“Although it is a competition with awards for the top three teams, the real focus of the day is to stimulate these young minds with a valuable learning
exercise,” said Dean of the College of Business Robert Niebuhr.
The first Florida Tech College of Business Ethics Competition was held in 1997. The Palm Bay High School team won over teams that represented five Brevard
County high schools. Since then, teams from Melbourne High School, St. Edward’s Upper School, Satellite High School, Astronaut High School, Melbourne
Central Catholic High School and Eau Gallie High School have also earned first place recognition.
Other participating high schools teams have been from Florida Air Academy, Bayside, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Sebastian River, Crooms Academy, Vero Beach, Lake
Howell, Lake Brantly and Covenant Christian.
Judges for the competition come from a variety of career fields and include many prominent members of the community.
Florida Tech will guarantee a minimum College of Business scholarship of $8,000 per year for each member of the first-place team, $6,000 for second-place
team members and $4,000 for the third-place team members.
Sponsored by Community Educators’ Credit Union, the event also offers $500 per member to the first-place team, $250 per member to the second-place team and
$125 per member to the third place team. In addition to student cash prizes, the Gannett Foundation will award all coaches $100 for each team to be used to
purchase classroom supplies.
Anyone may attend the competition in the afternoon to see the top three schools compete for scholarships. These teams have one hour to prepare an analysis
of a new case study and are given 30 minutes to present this analysis to the judges.
