Two at Florida Tech Named Gates Millennium Scholars

– Two Gates Millennium Scholars attending Florida Institute of Technology have learned that their scholarships have been renewed for the 2005-2006 academic
year. The scholars are Andres Gonzalez, a junior from El Paso, Texas, majoring in computer science, and Fernando Iglesias,
a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla. and a computer engineering major. This is the third year Gonzalez has earned the
scholarship and the second for Iglesias.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation began the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program in 1999. The goal is to provide academically talented, low-income
African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete a college
education.

Selected students may attend the university of their choice and enroll in an undergraduate degree program in any academic discipline. Since the program’s
inception, 9,050 students have been awarded a GMS scholarship.

The only independent scientific and technological university in the Southeast, Florida Tech is one of just five Florida schools selected in Barron’s Best
Buys in College Education. It is also named among America’s best colleges in U.S. News & World Report.
