Florida Tech’s Lifelong Scholar Society Announces 2016 Lecture Series Topics

First Lecture Scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 14

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Lifelong Scholar Society at Florida Institute of Technology’s Office of Continuing Education is pleased to announce the topics and presenters in its yearlong 2016 Lifelong Scholar Lecture series.

This year’s series will cover a wide variety of subjects, from aquaculture and coral reefs to reality television shows and media manipulation.

The hour-long lectures run from 6-7 p.m. Thursday evenings and are followed by a half-hour of informal conversation with the guest speaker. Coffee and pies from Joan’s Perfect Pies in Eau Gallie will be served.

Generally, lectures are held at either the Harris Community Center at Foosaner Art Museum, 1463 Highland Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne, or the Center for Aeronautics and Innovation, 1050 W. NASA Blvd. in Melbourne. The March 10 WFIT tour starts at Evans Library on the Florida Tech campus, and there are two other tours – Aug. 25 and Dec. 8 – that will take place at different locations.

Jan. 14: Offshore Oil Industry: A Story of Demand, Challenges, Engineering and the Environment, presented by Geoffrey Swain. Location: Center for Aeronautics and Innovation
Jan. 28: Media Manipulation: Real and Perceived, presented by Heidi Edwards. Location: Harris Community Auditorium

Feb. 25: 3D Medical Manufacturing, presented by Ken Brace, president, Rapid Prototyping Services, LLC. Location: Harris Community Auditorium
March 10: Tour and History of WFIT, presented by Terri Wright, general manager, WFIT. Location: Evans Library
March 24: Coral Reefs, presented by Robert van Woesik. Location: Harris Community Auditorium
April 14: Fish Adaptation: Changing Waters, presented by Ralph Turingan. Location: Center for Aeronautics and Innovation
April 28: Comic Books and Adaptation in Television and Film, presented by Lisa Perdigao. Location: Harris Community Auditorium
May 12: The Doppler on Wheels: A Big Dish in a Little Pond, presented by Steven Lazarus. Location: Center for Aeronautics and Innovation
May 26: Zombies and Zombification, presented by Angela Tenga. Location: Harris Community Auditorium
June 23: History of Florida Tech Property and Downtown Melbourne Before Florida Tech, presented by Erin Mahaney.
July 28: Primates: What the Other Primates Can Tell Us about Our Own Shortcomings, presented by Darby Proctor. Location: Harris Community Auditorium
Aug. 11: Reality Shows and Why People Are So Obsessed with Them, presented by Adam Young and Rolanda Hatcher-Gallop. Location: Center for Aeronautics and Innovation
Aug. 25: Tour of the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts, led by Carla Funk. Location: Ruth Funk Center
Sept. 8: Hurricane Season 2016, presented by George Maul. Location: Center for Aeronautics and Innovation
Sept. 22: History of Rock and Roll, presented by Jamie Younkin. Location: Harris Community Auditorium

Dec. 8: Olin Observatory and Ortega Telescope, presented by Daniel Batcheldor. Location: Olin Physical Sciences Building

Tickets for admission are $20 per person, $10 for Lifelong Scholar Society members and free to Florida Tech students, faculty and staff. A one-year membership to the Society is $35.
