Florida Tech’s Business College to Offer M.S. in Forensic Accounting

Starting Fall 2017, Program to Focus
On In-Demand Area of Accounting      

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology’s Nathan Bisk College of Business is launching a new Master of Science in Accounting and Financial Forensics degree that will offer participants training in an innovative and sought-after area of accounting.

This graduate professional program starts in the Fall 2017 semester. It emphasizes the breadth of preparation in accounting, finance and business technology alongside a depth of knowledge in forensic accounting, internal auditing and the financial environment. The degree, which may be completed in two years or less, provides the high-level knowledge and range of skills to meet the challenges of today’s accounting control and financial risk needs.

The 30-credit-hour program will be composed of six core courses, three related non-accounting/business courses, and one specialized elective in the accounting field. Rooted in the case method approach, this intensive M.S. program offers a uniquely collaborative, hands-on education.

The degree focuses on two populations: Accounting undergraduates who must satisfy the 150-credit-hour requirement to be licensed as Certified Public Accountants (or 30 hours beyond the bachelor degree), and other business majors and non-business majors interested in the expanding field of financial forensics. It is also appropriate for existing accounting professionals who desire additional accounting and financial forensics knowledge to advance their careers.

The applicant to the Master of Science in accounting and financial forensics program must have a bachelor’s degree, though the degree need not be in accounting.

“This degree provides the high-level knowledge and range of skills to meet the challenges of today’s accounting control and financial risk needs,” said Theodore Richardson, dean of the Nathan Bisk College of Business. “Employment opportunities for program graduates are forecast to be very strong, and we are happy to be able to utilize our outstanding faculty and facilities to help students gain entry into the accounting workplace.”

According to a 2015 trends report, over 70 percent of medium and large accounting firms expect to have increased employment. There are over 100 CPA firms in the metropolitan statistical area that includes Melbourne.
