Florida Tech Introduces Biomedical Engineering Program

MELBOURNE, FLA. — A new Florida Institute of Technology program in biomedical engineering will allow mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering graduate
students to become biomedical engineers. These engineers apply engineering and scientific methodologies in analyzing biological and physiological problems
in health care.

The program is currently open as a specialization area to master’s and doctoral degree students in mechanical engineering and to master’s degree students
in chemical and electrical engineering.

“The strategic vision for the biomedical engineering program at Florida Tech is to advance health care by integrating education, discovery, innovation and
entrepreneurship. This will be through the collaboration of physicians with laboratory scientists and engineers,” said Kunal Mitra, director of the Florida
Tech biomedical engineering program.

The program will promote collaboration between the local medical community and Florida Tech in several ways, including researcher-clinician partnerships;
student involvement in clinical research projects conducted by medical doctors; support of promising biomedical engineering translational (from the
laboratory to the clinic) collaborative research projects; bringing research results to the clinic through local medical center resources and Florida Tech
capabilities for technology transfer and commercialization.
