Writer, Editor and Recycled Fashion Enthusiast Yuka Yoneda Comes to Florida Tech April 9
MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology will host Yuka Yoneda, writer, editor and recycled fashion enthusiast, in the next Friends of Textiles Lecture Series presentation April 9. The lecture, “Is Eco-Fashion an Oxymoron?” is at 6 p.m. in the Denius Student Center’s Hartley Room on campus; a reception starts at 5:15 p.m.
The term “eco-fashion” has gained popularity in the past few years, but is it actually impossible for fashion –with its frenetic production cycle and planned obsolescence—to ever truly be green? In a lecture, titled, “Is Eco-Fashion an Oxy-Moron?” Yoneda explores ethical and environmental reforms taking place within the fashion industry as well as psychological and societal thought patterns that have begun to shift in the consumer mind.
“Despite what retailers might have us believe, green garments go way beyond a tag that says ‘organic cotton’ or ‘recycled polyester.’ This fascinating talk will take a look into what drives us to buy clothing the way we do and how, if at all, fashion can evolve towards a better future,” said Yoneda.
Yoneda is a senior editor at Ecouterre.com, a website devoted to the future of sustainable fashion. She holds a degree in exhibit design from theFashion Institute of Technologyanda bachelor’s degree in business management fromStony Brook University.
