Check Out F.I.T. Aviation’s Rising Star SummerPilot Program for High School Students

MELBOURNE, FLA.—How many times have you seen airplanes taking off from your local airport and wondered what it would be like to fly? Fulfilling that dream may be much closer than you think. Florida Institute of Technology and F.I.T. Aviation introduce the Rising Star Summer Pilot Program for high school students. “Rising Star” will begin June 7.

The program offers an opportunity for eligible high school students with no prior aviation experience to fly an airplane solo. Participants will spend five weeks with an FAA Certified Flight Instructor to prepare for what may be the most memorable moment in an aspiring aviator’s life.

Phase One will run for five weeks through July 9. Phase Two will run an additional three weeks through July 30.

Students may fly with an instructor at almost any age, but must be at least 16 years old to fly solo and 17 years old to get a Sport Pilot license. All high school flight students must be 17 years old by the end of the Sport Pilot Program to be eligible for an FAA check-ride.

Phase One: 15.0 flight hours total. This includes 14.5 hours of Dual Instruction; 0.5 hours of Solo Flight; and 9.0 hours of Ground Briefing Program, providing a certificate of first successful solo.

Those completing their first solo have the option to continue training to become a licensed Sport Pilot.

Phase Two: 11.0 flight hours total. This includes 6.5 hours of Dual Instruction; 4.5 hours of Solo Flight; and 9.0 hours of Ground Briefing.
Please note that Rising Star students will be required to submit a nonrefundable $500 deposit to secure their slot in the program.
