February Recap

February may have been short, but it certainly wasn’t short on action. Here’s what went down:

Events:

We kicked off the month with “Learn to Dance: Carnival Style,” and students samba-d and merengue-d their way across the floor.

On February 20th, we hosted “An Evening of Readings,” featuring eight local authors, this event was one to remember.

Guests stop by the signing table after the readings.

Updates:

  • We’re breathing new life into the Evans Library YouTube channel with new tutorials and how-to videos. Confused by the copiers? Mystified by citations? We can help. If you’d like to see a particular topic covered, let us know!
  • Arduino compatible RedBoards, Raspberry Pis, and Google VR goggles have been added to our tech lending program.
  • Our Safari eBooks package was just updated. We added over 2,700 new titles, but 2,900 titles were removed. Something you read last year may no longer be there, so keep that in mind while you search.
  • Print document delivery is here. Request any article, book, or conference proceeding, and we’ll get it to your ILLiad account. If it’s in our collection, we’ll try to get it to you within one business day.
  • We’ve updated our plumbing: You may have noticed Florida Tech’s wonderful Telecom team working around our building in the last week. We’re pleased to announce that 9 additional wireless access points and 7 network drops have been added around the library.
  • Our 3D printing lab is coming along nicely. Take a look at one of our test prints in the featured image!
  • Self-serve room reservations are here! You can now make a same-day reservation from the library lobby from our convenient touch-screen interface.

It's here! We're very excited about this new feature. You can make same-day reservations by simply picking your room and sliding your card.

General Announcements:

  • Faculty: our reserves are always open. Contact Nelle Robb (nrobb2004@fit.edu) with questions or materials.
  • Our bring-a-book, take-a-book library is looking sad and lonely. Bring in books for trade, or bring in books for donation. Don’t throw things away!
  • Our Open Access publication support fund page is live! The program will help Florida Tech researchers publish their research in open access journals by subsidizing publishing processing fees.

Upcoming Events:

Have you heard about our Conversation Hour? Every Wednesday between now and April 29th (excluding Spring Break) stop by room 217 for an hour of discussion and company, and improve your conversational skills at the same time. Conversation Hour will be held between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Aquaculture and gardening: a match made in heaven? Join us for “Sustainable Gardening with Sweet Leaf Aquaponics” on Friday, March 6th and learn how fish and plants can harmoniously coexist.

Representatives from Elsevier will be on campus March 16th and 17th to offer training for Scopus, Science Direct, and Mendeley. Stay tuned for more updates.

If you haven’t checked out our new origami display, you really should – and while you’re at it, fold a crane for peace! On March 26th, Ian Koss will be giving a talk on Origami, and on March 27th, we’ll be hosting an origami folding hour. Check our Facebook page for more updates as they develop.
